With the exponential growth of biomedical research data, traditional data management tools such as portable hard drives, shared file servers, email, CDs and DVDs are no longer adequate. Research data is too voluminous, too expensive and too important to be 'managed' ad hoc on various computers and disks scattered through a lab.
